New Moon in Virgo: September 10, 2026 – What The Swimmer Teaches Us

September 10, 2026

New Moon at 18°26′ Virgo | September 10, 2026 | 8:26 pm PDT | Portland, Oregon

The Image We are Given

The Sun and Moon meet in the nineteenth degree of Virgo, and the Sabian symbol for that degree is a swimming race.

Sit with the strangeness of it. Virgo is earth. Earth is measurement and sequence, the tool returned to its place, the loaf that rises because someone learned the dough by hand. And for the degree of this lunation, we are handed water. Not a field. Not a woman with a sheaf of wheat. A pool, lanes painted on the bottom, a row of bodies waiting on the blocks, a clock running.

Water cannot be gripped. It can only be met with form. That is the whole teaching of this new moon. The swimmer does not defeat the medium, she refines her relationship to it until it begins to carry her. Years of practice come down to the angle of one hand entering the surface. This is Virgo’s real mysticism, which almost nobody credits her for: the conviction that devotion looks like repetition, and that grace is what happens to a body that has practiced.

Marc Edmund Jones gave this degree the keyword elimination. Rudhyar, characteristically, moved it off the win and onto emulation, reading the water as psychic medium and the race as a shared crossing, the swimmer learning to operate in an element that is not her native one, moving either toward the far shore or back toward the source.

Both readings are alive in this chart. Something is being cut away. And there is a shore.

The Pool: This Lunation Falls in the Sixth House

The sign of Aries rises over Portland at the moment of the conjunction, which puts Virgo sixth from the ascendant (true for all of the PNW). The new moon lands in the sixth house in whole sign and in Placidus both, so this is not an artifact of technique. The pool is the sixth house: work, apprenticeship, the body, the daily, the small unglamorous obedience that hold a life upright. Health. Craft. The people you serve and the ones you answer to.

A Virgo new moon in the sixth house is about as concentrated as this energy gets. Sun and Moon in the sign of the tool, in the house of the work. There is no lofty view available. You are in the water.

And notice the count. Only three bodies in this chart occupy mutable signs: the Sun, the Moon, and Uranus. Thirteen are cardinal. That imbalance matters, because the modes describe what a chart is actually able to do with a situation. Cardinal starts. Fixed holds. Mutable is the only mode that revises. It sorts, it discards, it changes its mind halfway down the length and counts that as progress rather than failure. A chart without it can launch and it can endure, but it cannot correct course.

So the sky around this lunation is nearly all initiative and lunge, thirteen bodies wanting to begin something, and almost nothing in the room equipped to ask whether the thing being begun is the right thing. The two lights are carrying that capacity by themselves. Which means the sifting, correcting, willing-to-be-wrong function has to come from the lunation itself, and there is no second source for it. If the correction does not happen in these two weeks, in this sixth house, at this small daily scale, the cardinal majority will simply keep starting things.

The houses say it again from another angle. Nine of the chart’s points fall in cadent houses, the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth, which are the houses of learning, adjustment, apprenticeship and release. By sign this chart wants to charge. By house it stands exactly where you go to be taught. That is the whole tension in one line: the impulse is to sprint; the position is a training pool.

Everything else wants to go.

The Mind That Rules The Moon Has Left The Workshop

Mercury rules Virgo, so Mercury rules this lunation, and Mercury has just stepped out of Virgo into Libra. Less than a degree in. Still wet.

Which is precisely the swimming race problem. Mercury in Virgo tends its own work. Mercury in Libra looks at the next lane.

Anyone who has raced knows the moment. You are swimming well, your stroke is clean, and then you turn your head to check the body beside you and lose half a second and most of your rhythm. Comparison is not only a moral failure. It is a hydrodynamic one. It costs you the line.

Venus, meanwhile, sits at the very start of Scorpio in the seventh house, in her detriment, squaring Pluto in the eleventh. That is the shadow version of the same story: comparison metabolized into resentment, affection reorganized into ranking, community quietly sorted into who is doing better. If this lunation has a trap, that is it. Watch what happens in your chest when someone announces good news between now and the full moon.

Somebody Painted the Lanes

Here is where to expand on the symbol, because a swimming race is not a natural phenomenon. Water is natural. Swimming is natural. Lanes, heats, qualifying times and the podium are constructions, and someone built them, and it was not the people in the water.

Virgo has been handed a great deal of this. The sign of skill and discernment gets flattened into the sign of the good worker: tidy, useful, uncomplaining, forever improving toward a standard she did not set. The older meaning of the virgin was never chastity. It was belonging to herself. Unowned. Not valued by her usefulness to a household.

So when the symbol for this lunation is a graded, timed contest, and the lunation falls in the house of work and service, the question is not only how do I swim this better. It is who is holding the stopwatch, and when exactly did I agree to this race.

Jones’s keyword reads very differently in that light. What gets eliminated in a heat is swimmers. What could be eliminated here is the metric. Cut away the standard that was never yours. Keep the stroke.

The Doorway At The End of The Pool

Now the details in this chart that made me pause.

The nodal axis is sitting on the sixth and twelfth house cusps exactly. The South Node is 28 degrees 46 minutes of Leo. The sixth house cusp is at 28 degrees 45 minutes and 53 seconds of Leo. Seven seconds of arc. The South Node is the door into the pool. The North Node is the door out of it.

This one is local, dependent on Portland and on Placidus, so I offer it as a feature of the chart cast here rather than a universal claim. But I read the sky from this city, and the sky over a place is entitled to speak to that place.

Read it plainly. The known water, the practiced thing, the competence you can already perform on demand, all of that is South Node material. This is not an insult. The South Node is genuine mastery. It is where you are already excellent, and it is therefore exactly where you will hide.

The North Node is in the twelfth. The finish line is not in the pool. It is in the one house that cannot be timed, ranked or itemized: retreat, dissolution, prayer, immeasurable, the work nobody is watching. Rudhyar’s swimmer crossing to the far shore, or turning around and swimming back toward the source.

You are being asked to keep the discipline and abandon the scoreboard.

Uranus Stands Still

Nine hours before this lunation, Uranus stationed retrograde at 5 degrees of Gemini, in the second house of this chart.

A planet at station is not idle. It is a body at maximum pressure, all motion converted into stillness, like the instant at the top of the dive when nothing is moving and everything is already committed. Uranus does this in the house of resources and worth.

The second house is where you learn that value and valuation are two different words. Your worth is not your placing. It is not your rate, your following, your title, your times. Uranus stationing there and turning back through the sign of the restless mind is a nine hour silence before the gun. Something about what you are worth is under revision, and it will be revised on your own instruments, not at the judge’s table.

The Correction Comes From the Twelfth

Saturn is retrograde in Aries in the twelfth house, with Neptune below him, both of them backing through the opening degrees of the fire that starts everything.

Saturn makes a wide quincunx to the lunation, roughly five degrees, so I hold it loosely. But the quincunx is the right aspect to name here, because it describes two things that cannot see each other and cannot argue, only adjust. Saturn in the twelfth does not correct you with a memo. It corrects you with fatigue. With the swim that suddenly weighs more than it should. With the sense that the water has thickened.

That is not punishment and it is not evidence that you are failing. Saturn in the twelfth is the coach standing in the dark at the far end of the pool, and the only instruction is slow down, breathe on the other side, stop fighting the water you cannot see.

Neptune beside him dissolves the edge of the goal itself. Between now and the full moon you may not be able to say clearly what you are working toward. Let that be true for a while. Do not fill the fog with a plan just to have something to hold.

The Stroke You Learned At Home

One more configuration, and it is the tender one.

Mars, ruler of this chart’s Aries ascendant, is in Cancer in the fourth house, in its fall. Opposite him, Black Moon Lilith sits in Capricorn in the tenth. The new moon touches both: a sextile to Mars, a trine to Lilith, close enough to count. In the older attribution the tenth is the mother and the fourth is the father, so this is a family axis pulled taut, with the lunation as the third point that reaches both without strain.

Mars in Cancer in fall is not a warrior. It is effort gone tender and domestic, persistence expressed as feeding people, as showing up, as keeping the house standing. Real strength in an apron, getting no credit. Lilith in Capricorn in the tenth is the exiled feminine placed in the seat of authority, the one in the lineage who would not be managed, and would not be pleasant, nor would they accept the assignment.

You learned your stroke from these two. Everyone does. How you work, how you overwork, how you decide what counts as enough, whether you apologize or refuse: that technique was demonstrated to you before you were old enough to evaluate it.

The gift of this lunation is that sixth house work is exactly where an inherited stroke can be revised. Not by insight. By repetition. You change a stroke in the water, one length at a time.

Working With It

Intentions set under a Virgo new moon do best when they are small and physical. Not be healthier. Rather: this specific thing, this many times a week, starting Thursday.

  • Choose one technique, not one outcome. A single stroke to refine.
  • Name the metric you are quitting. Write down the standard you have been swimming against that you never chose. This is the elimination.
  • Catch the sideways glance. When you notice comparison arriving, return your eyes to your own lane, physically, with your actual head.
  • Give the twelfth house its hour. Something unmeasured and unwitnessed, every week, that produces nothing.
  • Let the body vote. This is a sixth house lunation. Fatigue is data, not weakness.
  • The Sabian symbol of the rising sign 18 degrees Aries is “A hammock between two trees” which is a reminder to rest in between whatever you’re working on at any moment during this lunar month.

The Crossing

The race in the symbol is real. There are other swimmers, the clock is running, and pretending otherwise is its own kind of hiding. But the water is older than the pool. Long before anyone painted a lane on the bottom, somebody waded out past her depth and found that if she stopped clutching she would be held.

That is the crossing. Everything else is a stopwatch.

Namaste. Bless this moment.
